I became a co-owner at Lakeview Estates in 1993. In addition to the Board of Directors, there were several active committees. Active committees help ease the enormous amount of work required by our volunteer Board members. Committees serve as an advisory council and make recommendations to the Board. Each committee includes a member of the Board as a liaison, and the Board always has the final say on any decisions made.

The Architectural Review Board was comprised of 3-5 co-owners who met once a month to review modification requests and make recommendations to the Board. They also helped develop standards that govern modifications such as doors, windows and landscaping.

The Budget committee worked with the treasurer to determine appropriate allocation of funds, proper funding of the Reserve Fund and give guidance on capital improvement projects.

The Bylaw Committee researched current laws and documents and suggested needed updates to reflect the needs of the community.

The Welcome Committee worked to greet new co-owners and make sure they had all the important documents needed to understand the ins and outs of condo living.

The Pond committee researched how to minimize soil erosion, combat algae and enhance the health of the pond.

We had an active Neighborhood Watch group.

There were other committees over the years, and I recall social events held at the clubhouse hosted by the Board.

There have been many changes in our community over the years. Difficult times caused by the housing crisis in 2008, foreclosures and financial strain certainly impacted us all. Fortunately our property values have rebounded, and we have many new co-owners as well as long-time residents. Bringing back these committees would be an excellent way to increase engagement and investment in Lakeview Estates. I have met so many people with a wide range of experience and expertise that would greatly benefit our community. Committees would be a great way to utilize this talent and contribute to making Lakeview the vibrant, active community it can be.
